It was my happy place!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7728490610017274864.post-46349998784513355242017-06-20T02:28:08.544-04:002017-06-20T02:28:08.544-04:00Michael,
I feel like you are "stealing" ...Michael,<br />I feel like you are "stealing" my story:). This is going to be therapeutic for me. Since I was able to speak I was asking questions of my elders about where I came from -the birds and the bees. Once I got that down I wanted to know where my mom and dad came from. Surely if I could go back far enough I could find the original person and solve the mystery surrounding the origin of mankind. <br />As a kid I begged my parents to drive me to cemeteries and libraries. I dreamed of someday being rich enough to travel to my ancestors homelands and find my ancestors. In my preteen years I would write letters to county clerks and place a return envelope with a stamp for the archivist to return photo copies of the records I needed. This is all before I even knew there was a name for what I was doing. I remember writing to clerks explaining that I was only 11 years old and didn't have any money to pay the clerk for their time. Not surprisingly, many clerks waived the fee and did extensive searching for me. One clerk, from Webster County, Missouri, found three generations of my ancestors which set a fire inside of me that is still burning strong. The stories my older relatives told about the wild west and tales of witchcraft in a small mining town in southwestern Arizona, fueled my fire. After all I was a simple suburban Southern Californian boy who grew up in a very different time and place. In the seventh grade my English teacher wrote the word, GENEALOGY, on a piece of paper and told me their was a name for my hobby/obcession. I went to the library and there I found the one book on the subject, Searching for your Ancestors, by Gilbert H. Doane. The only thing I remember from the book is the motto I have done my research by all these years..."<br />No stone is too small to turn over". I was very proud of what I achieved as a youngster but also a little embarrassed because I knew it wasn't a normal hobby for a child, like collecting hot wheels or marbles. In High School I was permitted to do my senior paper on my family history. I completed much of my genealogy prior to the advent of the computer which blows my mind when I think of it!<br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7728490610017274864.post-57445015745426342252014-05-06T07:13:56.744-04:002014-05-06T07:13:56.744-04:00I'm hooked too after a cousin told me about yo...I'm hooked too after a cousin told me about your blog.
